Amalaise

Founded in 2011, Amalaise is a Baltimore-based collaboration between visual and sound artist Beth Brown and established ambient electronic musician Jason Sloan. Brown’s vocal training and formal education in fine art helped to inform the overall aesthetic of the project.
The development of their debut album, “Twinning Pools,” consists of experimentation with vocals and field recordings in the spirit of Musique Concrète. Brown discovered micro-sound worlds existing in everyday items, such as kitchen appliances, free weights, house furniture, pots and pans, glass bottles, metal fencing, pipes, and countless other utilitarian objects. Most of “Twinning Pools” began as short exploratory soundscapes, designed to discover potential sonic textures from these unconventional instruments. Using various recording techniques, Brown would compose loosely structured pieces of music that would become the backbone of “Twinning Pools.” Together in the studio, Brown and Sloan combined these compositions with traditional instruments and production methods. After nearly a year of fine tuning, these ethereal soundscapes began to form the direction and content of the album, which was released March 15, 2012.

Brusque Twins
“Gates of Heaven”
Brusque Twins first emerged from the toxic conifer forest of the cold Canadian north and surfaced in Montreal in approximately 2010 A.D. The specifics are unknown. Hollie Hensman and Derek George are the physical manifestation of Brusque Twins.
Their arrival marked the beginning of frequent nocturnal sightings around the city in clubs and on factory floors. Eyewitnesses report the two speaking in colors, delays, ethereal voices and driven by a constant rhythmic pulse. Feeding off Acid, early Industrial and Detroit Techno, the Brusque Twins experience is said to be a dark trance-inducing game of desire.

L’Avenir
“Behind the Glass”
L’Avenir is the dark synth project of veteran electronic musician and sound artist Jason Sloan. Known throughout the space and ambient music scenes for his contemplative electronic soundscape work for over a decade; Sloan founded L’Avenir as a side project in 2012 to explore his long time love of synth and minimal wave music created purely from analog and vintage equipment.
While releasing over a dozen solo solo electronic ambient albums and E.P.’s under his own name, Sloan has played solo all over the US, Canada and Europe including the influential Live Constructions radio program at Columbia University, STEIM in Amsterdam and Philadelphia’s The Gatherings concert series, one of the country’s oldest continuing ambient and electronic music series.
Sloan is a Professor teaching full-time in the Interactive Arts department along with being the founder and program coordinator for the Sound Art concentration at the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore, Maryland.

Grant incorporates melancholy melodies and vintage synthesizers to recreate personal feelings he fears can be lost over time. His main influences are Interpol, Palmbomen, Mr. Oizo, Kourosh Yaghmaei, and New Order.

“Niebla”
Psychic Hearts is a Mexican duo of post-punk music, shoegazing and dark wave formed in State of Mexico in 2012.Composed of Erick Arevalo (guitar/vocals/drum machine) and Javier Mejia (bass guitar/ vocals), the duo creates a sound which is influenced by the classic underrated bands like “The Jesus and the Mary Chain”, Dead can Dance and passing thru the industrial techno of Cabaret Voltaire.
This new band has released three washed out dark pop singles that will give you an taste of what is ahead for this band musically. This young duo works with a reverbed vocal effect that makes the lyrics mysterious and almost indiscernible, as if you were listening through gauze – a common technique in shoegaze and dream pop. Psychic Heart’s use of drum machine moves the band into a more minimalist direction; their guitars come to the fore, creating a dark, echoic vibe in their debut recordings.
“Niebla” is a song produced especially for the compilation.
